Chapter XXII [Stendhal – Love]
INFATUATION
“…And before the sensations resulting from the objects of affection reach them, they invest these, even far and before they see them, with imaginary charms drawn out of the inexhaustible well inside themselves. Then, as they come nearer to these objects, they see them not as they are, but as they have made them, and delighting in their own selves in the guise of an object, they think their delight of for that loved object. Then, one fine day, they become tired of doing all the work, they discover that the adored object isn’t returning the ball; infatuation falls away, and wounded pride becomes unjust to an object overvalued.”
Some features here that Stendhal could {but of course could not] have developed.
